Welcome to AVID!

AVID is an elective class that is offered at each grade level at Justice Page Middle School. AVID meets every day, and is a year-long class. The goal of AVID is to provide academically motivated students greater skills in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading so that they are prepared for high school and college.

WICOR Strategies and Grading:

AVID curriculum is set up to focus on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading (WICOR). Throughout the year, students will explore different themes but will always use WICOR strategies. Our grading will assess these strategies.

80% ASSESSMENTS:

  • WRITING: I can reflect & record ideas about learning.

  • INQUIRY: I can ask open-ended questions and discuss high-level questions

  • COLLABORATION: I can solve problems and help create a positive learning environment

  • ORGANIZATION: I can manage materials and practice methodical study habits

  • READING: I can use text to increase success in reading.

20% WORK HABITS:

  • WORK HABITS:  I can use and practice effort, participation and responsibility skills that will prepare me for high school and college.

Absence Policy:

When absent, students should check with a classmate and refer back to their planner to keep up with class. Many resources are on websites (see above) and MyMPS. Teachers can be available before or after school (by appointment) to catch up.

Assignments:

In AVID, students will usually have homework that is due on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These assignments are called Tutorial Request Forms (TRFs), and are important for the growth in study skills of AVID students. On occasion, other assignments will be given. Almost always students will be given advanced notice of these assignments and several nights to complete them.

Please be on time with assignments! TRF’s are important to complete each week, and must be completed on time. You will have several graded each quarter that will count toward your grade. Due to the nature of preparing and studying with TRFs, they will not be accepted late! All other assignments can be re-submitted to improve your grade at any time before the end of the quarter.

Family Involvement:

AVID is the only class at Justice Page Middle School that requires a student contract. Things that may help your student fulfill this contract are setting a designated day to go through the portal, check the planner nightly and have them cross out completed work, have them walk you through their binder, etc...  In the contract that each family signs, we ask that each student does the following.

  1. Maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes.

  2. Complete all homework assignments.

  3. Maintain at least a C in AVID and all core classes.

  4. Maintain the AVID binder with a planner/calendar, class assignments, and daily Cornell notes in all classes.

  5. Be an active learner, be prepared for all classes with all assigned work completed, take focused-notes, and be an active participant in all classes.

  6. Maintain enrollment in college preparatory courses.

  7. Participate in AVID tutorials, field trips, and activities.

We look forward to a great year in AVID.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Doug Werner - 6th Grade

Alex Fowler - 7th Grade

Abbey Janicek - 8th Grade
