Brenda Butler

I am Brenda Butler. I am one of the two art teachers at Ramsey. I am also teaching STEAM classes.  I have taught art in Minneapolis Public Schools since 2001. I am excited to start my 3rd year at Ramsey.  I've taught middle school art at Lake Nokomis Community School - Keewaydin, elementary art at Wenonah and Park View Montessori. I taught high school art at Irondale High School for a couple years. Before coming to art teaching, I worked in the education department at Minneapolis Institute of Arts  with their kids classes and Family Days.

I grew up in Kansas and have BFA degrees in Art and Art History from the University of Kansas. I got my M.Ed and teaching license in Art Education from the University of Minnesota in 1999. My background is in textile design and I've spent years weaving, knitting, felting and stitching wearable art. Currently, I've been working in paper and wool. This summer I've been learning to make my own yarn! I met a sheep farmer in June and bought a sheep fleece and I've been washing, cleaning,

combing and now spinning yarn made from Martha the sheep.

Biking, running and nordic skiing are my moving passions. Ask me about mountain biking for middle school students, I'll tell you all about it! I also love to spend quiet days reading novels and spending time with my husband, Joel and three kids, Izzy, Owen and Neal.

I'm so excited to be a part of the Ramsey Middle School Community. I have the double thrill of teaching the awesome 6th, 7th AND 8th grade students at Ramsey as well as teaching side by side with Ms. Elissa Cedarleaf Dahl. Grab your brushes, scissors and glue, it's going to be a fantastically creative year of art making.
