Brief Overview of Student Expectations

These expectations are in place to help all students achieve academic success at Justice Page Middle School. We believe each child has the ability to learn and be successful. We want to partner with families in order to help every child be successful at JPS!

  • Classwork/Homework: Learning is not optional. If a student chooses to not complete homework or classwork, they may be asked to come in early (before school) to complete missing assignments/assessments. If a student misses their appointment with their teacher, they may be asked to stay in from movement until the assignment is completed. These students will be referred to the deans who continue to make appointments with teachers to complete missing assignments. If they need additional support, they need to let a staff member know. We want ALL students to be successful and we keep academics at the forefront to help prepare them for high school, while also developing life skills (time management, responsibility, self advocacy, etc.).
  • Fidgets: Unless identified in an individualized learning plan (IEP/504), will not be allowed. This means no spinners, no cubes, no putty/slime, or anything of that sort.
  • Lockers: We will provide a combination lock for all students at Justice Page Middle School. Each student will receive a lock from their crew leader with their own combination. Students should NOT share their combination with any other student or share lockers. Students are responsible for their own belongings in their locker. If a student loses the school lock, it will be $5.00 for a replacement. They can speak with their crew leader to get a replacement. No personal locks will be allowed.
  • Backpacks: Should be kept in the student’s locker for the entire day. Students will not be allowed to have backpacks at lunch, in the hallway, or in class (even 7th hour). This is a safety concern.
  • Coats/Jackets: Should also be kept in the student's locker for the entire day. A sweatshirt can be used to stay warm. In the winter, students must grab their coat on their way down to lunch if they want to wear it to movement.
  • Phones/Headphones: We have a “no phone” policy. Students' phones must be kept locked in their locker for the entire day. Phones are not allowed in the hallways, at lunch, at movement, or in class. The phone will be safe in their locker if they do not share their combination. If they need to use the phone, they can come to the office or ask a teacher to use the classroom phone. If parents need to get in touch with their student for an emergency, they can call the main office. At the end of the day, after the final bell, students will have access to their phones. If the student continues to use their phone or has their phone visible, this could lead to disciplinary action (detentions, parent meetings, parent pick-up of phone, suspension, etc.).
    • The WHY: The goal is to lessen distractions in the learning environment, decrease negative interactions with staff, and slow down social media conflicts and peer to peer conflicts that can escalate and cause an unsafe environment. We want academics to be a student’s first priority.
  • Tardies: Students will have 4 minutes between classes to transition to the next class. If a student is late, they should enter quietly, respectfully, and find their seat quickly. They will be marked "tardy - unexcused" if they do not have a pass from staff.
    • After the 5th cumulative tardy, a student will serve a lunch detention and parent contact will be made.
    • After the 10th cumulative tardy, a student will serve 3 lunch detentions, and parent contact will be made.
    • After the 15th cumulative tardy, a student will serve 5 lunch detentions, parent contact will be made, a dean will place the student on a tardy contract, and a possible referral to the attendance team.
    • If a student continues to demonstrate frequent tardiness, dean/administration will review the case and the following can occur: parent conferences, family circle, loss of privileges (ability to participate in student groups, field trips, movement, passing with their peers, after school activities, etc.), detention, reverse suspensions, out of school suspensions, and eventually could lead to truancy and be reported to the legal system

We believe that attendance supports academic success at Justice Page Middle School. Frequent tardies can lead to academic disengagement and impact academic success.

  • Movement/Lunch: Students will spend approximately 15 minutes outside and 15 minutes eating lunch. Students will first go outside and two whistles will be blown: a 15 minute whistle and a 10 minute whistle. Students are expected to stay in the cafeteria unless they have a pre-written pass to visit a teacher during lunch. No phones are allowed at lunch (or anywhere). If a student wants to wear their coat for movement, they must grab their coat on the way down to lunch. Parents and students should plan on going outside unless it "feels like" zero or below. If students are unable to go outside, alternate activities will be planned in the gym, media center, and cafeteria.

Research shows that students who are physically active throughout the school day achieve higher levels of cognitive functioning in the areas of memory, focus, higher level thinking, and enhances the ability to switch from task to task. Students who are physically active are also known to have fewer behavior concerns in the classroom. Research will also show students who are physically active have a lower risk of depression, anxiety, heart disease, obesity, certain cancers, and substance abuse.

  • Dress Code: No hoods should be worn in the building; the 3B’s (butts, breasts/cleavage, and belly buttons) should be covered; no sagging or low-cut pante (no undergarments/undershorts should be visible); no apparel with reference to drugs, gangs, or inappropriate language. State law also requires students to wear shoes in the school building. Students will be given the opportunity to change or borrow clothes (from a friend or from the school) if dressed inappropriately. Student refusal will result in removal from the building for the rest of the day.
  • Classroom Engagement: Our expectations are that students are in class on time and fully participating in what the teacher has planned for the day.
  • Passes/Planner: Students will be given 10 quarterly passes in their planners. These are student-generated passes for when they wish to get a drink, use the restroom, or go to their locker for forgotten items. Once their passes are used, they will not be given any more. We want our students to be in their classes as much as possible so they do not miss out on the instruction. If they lose their planner, they will not be given another one with passes. They may purchase a replacement planner for $5.00, but the replacement will not have more passes in it.
  • Bullying: Bullying is "unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power differential, is repeated over time, and is harmful." If a student feels they are a victim of bullying, they should report it to a dean or administration. Deans/Admin will investigate. If bullying has occurred, it will be reported to the district. This can be for face to face, social media, or any other method.
  • Alcohol/Drugs/Tobacco/Vaporizers/Weapons: Posession and/or use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or weapons on the premises or at school activities is prohibited. Being under the influence of intoxicating beverages or drugs is prohibited at school or at any school activity. Any student found in violation will be suspended according to district policy and referred to other school support staff.
