Ramsey Middle School

The Minneapolis Board of Education voted on November 29, 2011 to open a new middle school at the Alexander Ramsey Junior High School building. Opening a new middle school is a very exciting development in the Minneapolis Public Schools. The fact that this idea originated through community collaboration makes this change even more exciting.

Ramsey Middle School opened for the Burroughs and Lyndale attendance areas with a 6th grade class of approximately 170-220 students. Students who live in the Hale/Field and Green attendance areas, K-8 school areas that attend Washburn High School, may also attend the new middle school and be eligible for transportation if outside the one mile walk-zone. Over the initial three years the program was expected to grow to approximately 600-650 6th through 8th graders.

To ensure that the development of the new middle school was successful, Superintendent Johnson asked Lyndale Principal Ossie Brooks-James and Burroughs Principal Tim Cadotte to be involved in the development of the new middle school as well as Washburn Principal Carol Markham-Cousins. In addition, Cindy Reuther, the Ramsey Middle School project lead, has extensive experience with opening a new middle school. Paul Marietta was hired as a principal in February 2012.

In 2015, Green Central's 6-8th grades joined Ramsey Middle School, bringing student population up to approximately 850-900 students.
