Justice Page Middle School Music Course Descriptions

Students with no previous experience in band will learn and apply the fundamentals of music through performance on a band instrument. Students will choose an instrument with the help of the instructor after trying out the following: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone. Students will begin by studying the Foundations for Performance including proper technique and successful tone production in a small group lesson setting. Students will then transition to a large ensemble setting where we will perform in concerts throughout the year.

Students with at least one year of experience (or with director’s approval) on a band instrument should enroll in Intermediate Band. Students will perform challenging literature as well as apply aspects of successful performance practices in concerts throughout the year. We will continue to develop instrumental and expressive technique using a variety of differentiated approaches through the formative and summative assessment process. Students will have an active role in selecting individual learning targets related to the long term learning targets. Students will also further refine and hone technique on their instrument as well as deepen their knowledge and mastery of music theory and history.

Players will increase their skill on their individual instrument and also learn how to play as a group. Students are expected to practice their instrument outside of class on a regular basis. In-school and public performances are scheduled throughout the year.

Students will have the opportunity to choose from the violin, viola, cello or string bass. School instrument rentals are available. This course will cover correct position, left-hand technique, bowing techniques, and beginning note reading skills. Ensemble skills will follow in the second semester.

This course is for students with at least one year of study on the violin, viola, cello or bass. Students will continue to expand their abilities of note reading and rhythmic understanding, while focusing on tone production, bowing technique and intonation (pitch awareness and accuracy). A variety of orchestral literature will be studied.

This course is focused on vocal expression and ensemble singing.  Students will focus on developing proper technique, reading and notating music, and studying a wide range of repertoire.  The choir will also be featured during in-school and public performances throughout the year.

‚ÄčThis course is intended for students who would like a wide variety of musical experiences.  Units for this class are focused on learning to sing and play many different of musical styles, identifying and analyzing the sounds we hear, and creating compositions of our own.
